Test your microphone before recording
In 15 seconds, check that your voice is loud enough, background noise is low and nothing clips. The sound stays in your browser.
The test takes about 15 seconds.
How it works
- Allow the microphone
Your browser asks for access. Pick the right mic from the list if you have several.
- Stay quiet for 3 seconds
We measure the room's background noise: fans, computer, street.
- Read a sentence
We measure your voice level, check for clipping, then you play the recording back.
Frequently asked questions
What level should I aim for?
Your voice should peak around −12 to −6 dB. Below −24 dB it's too quiet; at 0 dB it clips and crackles.
How do I reduce background noise?
Get closer to the mic (a hand's width), move it away from the computer, turn off fans, and record in a room with soft furnishings (curtains, bed, rugs).
Is the built-in laptop mic good enough?
To start, yes, if the room is quiet. A lavalier or an inexpensive USB mic makes a clear difference.
Is the recording stored?
No. It stays in your browser's memory and disappears when you close the page.
